About Us

Our Purpose

BME PROUD was originally established by a group of LGBT Muslims to support LGBT Muslims.

Rarely spoken about, rarely acknowledged, rarely understood but readily condemned, the juxtaposition of faith and sexuality is an emotive and sensitive subject. LGBT Muslims, and those of other faiths, have for many centuries been unable to reconcile the two. But increasingly the question is heard: "Why should I not be able to be both gay and Muslim, or Christian, or Jewish, Hindu or Sikh?"

BME PROUD exists to provide an opportunity for that question to be addressed in an environment of trust and mutual respect.

Our Aims

Our over-riding aim is to improve the quality of life for LGBT people living in Luton. We will do this by:

  • providing support, information and signposting
  • tackling disadvantage, discrimination and under-representation
  • supporting the educational, professional and social development of our members
  • providing a voice for those whose voices are seldom heard
  • working to ensure policies and service delivery reflect the needs of LGBT people

We also aim to promote the Islamic values of peace, social justice and tolerance, and to work towards a world that is free from prejudice against all Muslims and LGBT people.

Our Services

As a social support group BME Proud provides the following services:

  • information and signposting
  • advocacy
  • support for LGBT people, their families and friends
  • opportunities to meet and socialise with other LGBT people

We also work with partners and host/deliver various training and workshops including Diversity and Inclusion, The Equality Act 2010, Dementia Awareness, Diabetes Awareness and Stroke Awareness to name a few.
